Beautiful Hill Stations In India - Matheran

Matheran is a wonderful hill station in Maharashtra - the smallest and most popular. Located at an altitude of about 2650 feet, this tourist place is located in the mountainous region of the Western Ghats range. Matheran's proximity to the big busy cities makes it an early retreat on weekends. Matheran means 'forest on the head'. History suggests that Mathew was discovered in 1850 by Hugh Polintz Mullet. One day he suddenly discovered this place while hunting. Along with 'Panchgani', the British changed this place as a summer tourist destination.

Like other tourist destinations, Matheran also has many scenic spots that offer mesmerizing views of the nearby horizon. Of the 38 government points, the Panorama Point is a point that offers a 360-degree view of the entire region. You will be enchanted by seeing the sunrise and sunset that can be seen from this place. Heart Point offers a mesmerizing view of the light of different colors coming from the nightlife of Mumbai. From Louis Point one can clearly see the historic Fort Prabal Fort which is another famous site. Presently this fort has become ruins but it was a strong royal structure of it's time. Some other famous points are Monkey Point, Porcupine Point and One Tree Hill Point. Matheran is filled with buildings and monuments inspired by old British architecture. Most of these structures have been declared heritage.

The forests of Matheran are dense and in some parts impenetrable. Tourists are surprised to see the monkeys freely roaming around the entire area. It is generally recommended that you do not carry any plastic items with you as monkeys may snatch it from you. You are warned. An interesting fact about Matheran is that it is one of the few areas of the world where vehicles of any kind are not allowed. It is ecologically influenced and gives you a glimpse of the times when there were no vehicles nearby.

Customers are excited in Matheran's market as many items are kept here for tourists, from creative artwork to souvenirs that you can take home. The fact that it is a hill station prevents Matheran from scorching heat in summer. The weather here remains cold throughout the year, where the nights are surprisingly cold. PRABAL FORT

Prabal Fort is an important fort of historical importance during the time of the Maratha reign and the Mughal period. This fort is famous for treasures and for the time when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured it. It is located in Matheran.



SHIVAJI'S LADDER

Shivaji's ladder is another must visit place. One of the main attractions of the Matheran region, this place is a link connecting One Tree Hill Point to the Matheran Valley, which is step-shaped. Many legends that Shivaji Maharaj used this route for hunting and nature wandering. Because the whole Matheran looks like a piece of heaven on earth.


CHARLOTTE LAKE

Charlotte or Charlotte Lake is located in Matheran. The famous holiday destination of Matheran, this lake is surrounded by the Pisharnath Temple, an ancient temple on its right side that attracts many devotees throughout the year. Luis Point and Echo Point are the favorite places of monsoon in this lake. It is a center of tourist activity where many species of birds are seen all the time.


SUNSET POINT

Also known as Sunset Point - Matheran is a fascinating place. It gets its name after the Prakyupine bird which is said to be like. Cathedral rock nearby is another attraction which can be seen from here. From this place one can see the sunset and the magnificent view of Prabalgad Fort.


HEART POINT

Heart Point offers a bird's eye view of the green plains and peaceful villages of the surrounding area. Famous in Matheran, this place offers breath-taking views of the Western Ghats mountain range and the nightlife of Mumbai. Far from condemnation of normal life, this place is quiet and fine and its serene environment makes it the perfect place to spend a quiet evening with your loved one or to relax.


HOW TO REACH

BY AIR
The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport of Mumbai is the nearest airport to Matheran which is located at a distance of about 100 km. Pune Airport is another option which is located about 120 km away.


BY TRAIN
Neral railway station is about 20 km from Matheran, the nearest railway station. Neral Junction is well connected to CST.


BY ROAD
Public and private buses connect Matheran to all major cities of Maharashtra. Luxury and deluxe buses charge more than normal buses.
